A strong cold wave has gripped Odisha, bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures across both interior and coastal regions. The chilly conditions are being driven by icy north-westerly winds blowing in from northern India, creating a winter-like atmosphere much earlier than usual.
Bhubaneswar Records Steady Temperature Fall
For the past three days, Bhubaneswar has witnessed a consistent dip in temperature. Early this morning, at around 5:30 AM, the capital city recorded a minimum temperature of 14.8°C, marking a drop of 1.2°C from November 14, when the minimum was 16°C.
Overall, the city has cooled by nearly 1.5°C in just two days, making mornings noticeably colder for commuters and residents.
Interior and Coastal Districts Face Severe Chill
Several districts—including Koraput, Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Khordha, and Jharsuguda—have recorded an even sharper decline, ranging from 5 to 7 degrees below normal.
Coastal areas too have been affected, with temperatures slipping 3 to 5 degrees below the typical seasonal average.
Temperatures Drop Below 12°C in Multiple Cities
The cold wave has been particularly harsh in Odisha’s interior and hilly regions. As many as ten cities reported temperatures below 12°C.
Areas such as Semiliguda, Daringbadi, G. Udayagiri, and Phulbani experienced biting winds, dense morning fog, and harsh cold more commonly seen in peak winter. Many residents shared that early-morning travel has become challenging due to poor visibility and freezing air.
IMD Predicts Longer Cold Spell
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cold wave is expected to last longer than initially expected. While earlier forecasts suggested a two-day spell, updated assessments indicate that the cold conditions may continue for up to a week.
Night temperatures are likely to remain low, especially in northern, interior, and hilly districts.
Authorities Advise Precaution
The IMD has urged residents—especially children, older adults, and people with chronic health conditions—to take necessary precautions. With temperatures showing a steady decline, it appears that winter has arrived early in Odisha, and conditions may worsen in the coming days.
