BCCI Confirms Shubman Gill Ruled Out of Kolkata Test After Neck Spasm; India Captain Taken to Hospital for Evaluation

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Shubman Gill will not take any further part in the first Test against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The India captain walked off midway during India’s batting innings on Day 2 after suffering a sudden neck spasm.

Gill Taken to Hospital; Under Observation

Before the start of play on Day 3, the BCCI issued an official update stating that Gill was taken to the hospital for a detailed examination.
The board added that the 26-year-old remains under the care of the BCCI Medical Team, and his condition will continue to be monitored.

“Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of the day’s play. He is currently under observation and will take no further part in the Test,” the BCCI statement read.

How the Injury Happened

Gill faced only three balls on Day 2. After playing a sweep shot for four, the opener was seen clutching the back of his neck in discomfort.
The physio rushed to the field and attended to him for several minutes. Though Gill attempted to continue, the pain forced him to walk off the field alongside the medical staff.

India were eventually bowled out for 189, securing a slender 30-run lead.

Gill Seen Being Moved on a Stretcher

Visuals later on Saturday showed Gill being placed on a stretcher at the stadium and transported for further evaluation — indicating the severity of the spasm.

Concerns Over Gill’s Workload Intensify

Gill has had one of the busiest cricketing calendars among Indian players in 2025. Since becoming India’s Test captain, he has featured in:

  • Champions Trophy 2025

  • IPL 2025 (Gujarat Titans)

  • Five Tests vs England

  • Asia Cup 2025

  • Two Tests vs West Indies

  • Three ODIs and five T20Is vs Australia

With Gill also leading India in ODIs, questions have repeatedly been raised about whether grooming him as an all-format captain is sustainable given the physical demands of the modern game.

India Await Further Medical Updates

For now, team management is focused on Gill’s recovery, while the medical team continues to assess his condition. His availability for the upcoming matches against South Africa will depend on the results of his tests and medical advice.
