China has sharply criticised US President Donald Trump’s call for 50–100% tariffs on Beijing over its ties with Russia, stressing that it does not “participate in or plan wars” but instead promotes peace talks.
Speaking at a news conference in Ljubljana, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said,
“Wars cannot solve problems, and sanctions will only complicate them. China encourages peace talks and supports political settlement of hotspot issues through dialogue.”
Wang Yi made the remarks after meeting Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon.
The Chinese minister called for strengthening multilateralism, protecting the UN Charter, and avoiding confrontational politics. He urged China and Europe to act as “friends rather than rivals” and cooperate to address global instability.
Trump’s fresh tariff threat came after he accused NATO members of weakening the alliance’s negotiating power with Russia by continuing to buy Russian oil. The US President had earlier imposed a 50% tariff on India over similar oil purchases.
