A 20-year-old man died and two others were hospitalised on Saturday after inhaling toxic fumes caused by a chemical leak in the Andheri MIDC area of Mumbai, officials confirmed. The incident occurred around 4:55 pm inside a two-storey structure in Bhangarwadi, located within the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) zone.
According to officials, the cause of the leak is still under investigation. The condition of the three individuals present at the site deteriorated rapidly after exposure to the fumes.
Emergency teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade reached the location soon after receiving the alert. All three victims were rushed to Holy Spirit Hospital, where Ahmad Hussain, aged 20, was declared dead on arrival.
The other two individuals—Naushad Ansari (28) and Saba Shaikh (17)—are currently undergoing treatment and remain under medical observation.
Search Operations Underway
Authorities have launched a search and safety inspection at the site. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been put on standby and alerted about the situation as a precaution.
Similar Incident Reported in Hardoi
Earlier, in an unrelated incident, at least 16 students at a private school in Sandila town in Hardoi district were hospitalised after a suspected gas leak. One child was later referred to Lucknow for specialised care.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to ensure proper treatment and ordered a thorough investigation. Hardoi District Magistrate Anunay Jha said initial findings suggest the leak may have originated from the school’s laboratory. Safety checks have been initiated across other schools in the district.
Authorities in both cases continue to closely monitor the situation.
