The revered Char Dham Yatra has been put on hold as Uttarakhand reels under the impact of continuous heavy rainfall and the looming threat of landslides.

In a decisive move aimed at safeguarding pilgrims and local residents, authorities announced a temporary suspension of the pilgrimage on Sunday.

According to Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey, devotees have been instructed not to proceed toward the temples until weather conditions normalise. “The safety of life and property is our foremost priority,” he said, urging travellers to follow official guidelines.

The route disruption came in the wake of a cloudburst near Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunotri road in Uttarkashi district. The incident left nine workers missing at a construction site. Rescue efforts involving teams from the NDRF, SDRF, and local police are ongoing.

District administrations have been placed on high alert. Relief teams are proactively monitoring the vulnerable routes connecting the sacred sites of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Vinod Kumar Suman, Uttarakhand’s Secretary of Disaster Management, confirmed that constant surveillance and rapid response mechanisms are in place.

Lakhs of pilgrims embark on the Char Dham journey every year, seeking spiritual solace and divine blessings. The interruption, though disappointing, reflects the state’s readiness to prioritise human lives over ritual timelines.
