Tensions flared in Athagarh block following a Panchayat Samiti meeting on Tuesday as a confrontation between BJP and BJD supporters erupted into violence.
Chaos broke out near the block office when protestors hurled stones at the police, leading to a swift crackdown.
According to local sources, the disagreement escalated into a heated altercation shortly after the meeting adjourned. The situation spiralled as slogans turned into scuffles, culminating in a direct assault on law enforcement personnel stationed at the site.
In response to the disturbance, police launched an immediate operation and arrested 59 individuals allegedly involved in the attack. Authorities are continuing their investigation and searching for additional suspects believed to have instigated the mob violence.
The incident has raised concerns about escalating political tensions in the region ahead of upcoming elections. Both party representatives have accused each other of instigating unrest, while police officials have appealed for calm and cooperation from all sides.
The Athagarh Sub-Divisional Police Officer stated that “firm legal action will be taken against those attempting to disrupt public order.” Security in the region has been heightened to prevent further incidents.
