The death of medical student Chandrika Hembram has taken a dramatic turn after her family alleged that a love triangle involving her Odisha Administrative Service officer boyfriend and another woman led to her demise.
Barang Police registered Case No. 283 under Sections 108 and 34 following a complaint by Chandrika’s mother, Hiramani Hansda. She accused the officer of distancing himself from her daughter after another woman entered his life, subjecting Chandrika to mental harassment.
Chandrika’s body was recovered from the Kathajodi River near Cuttack. Investigators seized her mobile phone, prescription papers, and belongings found near Netaji Subhas Bridge. Police are examining call records, chats, and digital evidence to determine whether she died by suicide or foul play.
The family claimed Chandrika faced rejection despite a 14‑year relationship with the officer. They alleged he refused marriage due to her complexion and preferred a fair‑skinned woman. Chandrika reportedly underwent cosmetic skin‑lightening treatment in Bhubaneswar, taking multiple injections in hopes of saving the relationship.
An audio recording of a conversation between Chandrika’s mother and the officer has surfaced, in which he allegedly admitted his feelings had faded. Family members said Chandrika had considered legal action before her death.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Rishikesh Khilari confirmed investigators are probing harassment, abetment to suicide, and murder angles. Forensic reports and witness statements will determine the exact circumstances.
