Central Railway (CR) is preparing to launch its first air-conditioned (AC) local train with a modern design featuring an underslung motor and electrical system.
This design positions key components beneath the coaches, increasing seating capacity and passenger comfort. The new train is expected to enter service by early summer.
Currently at the Kurla yard for testing, the blue-and-silver AC train has undergone thorough inspections to ensure optimal use of space. Compared to earlier models, it can carry 1,116 seated passengers, an increase from 1,028, while maintaining a standing capacity of 4,936.
To address rising demand, CR is adding a seventh AC local to its fleet, the first new addition in two years. The current six AC locals provide 66 daily services, with the new train serving as a backup to minimize disruptions during maintenance.
CR is also evaluating potential operational challenges during the monsoon season, as the underslung motor design may lead to issues if tracks become waterlogged. The lower elevation of CR’s tracks makes them more susceptible to waterlogging compared to those of Western Railway.
