Bengaluru witnessed a heartbreaking tragedy as a stampede during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) victory celebration at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and left several injured.
The police have now registered a case against RCB, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), DNA Networks, and others, citing criminal negligence.
The FIR, filed suo motu by the Cubbon Park Police, includes charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including culpable homicide not amounting to murder and unlawful assembly. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Central, Shekar H Tekkannavar, confirmed the registration of the case.
The stampede occurred during the public event organised to celebrate RCB’s first-ever IPL title win. While authorities had initially suggested hosting the event over the weekend, government officials allegedly insisted on conducting it immediately, leading to crowd mismanagement and lapses in preparation.
Further investigations are underway, and authorities are reviewing security arrangements to determine accountability. The tragic event has raised serious concerns regarding event safety protocols and crowd control measures at large-scale public gatherings.
