Jagatsinghpur: As many as 40 people were injured, 10 of them critical, as a bus carrying a marriage party fell off a bridge in Balikuda area of Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district on Monday. The mishap took place near Sobha petrol pump on the Tihudi Naharana main road under the jurisdiction of Balikuda police station.
As per reports, the private bus named ‘Babamani’ was returning with guests after a wedding ceremony from Budhisahi to Dhanuhar Belari village. Suddenly, the driver lost control of the wheels and the ill-fated vehicle skidded off the road. More than 40 people, including women and children, sustained injuries as the bus overturned after falling off the bridge.
After learning about the mishap, local people, police and fire services personnel rescued the victims and rushed them to a nearby Balikuda and Jagatsinghpur hospital for medical aid. Later, some of them were shifted to SCB Hospital in Cuttack as their health conditions deteriorated.
Although the cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, some occupants of the bus alleged that the driver was under the influence of liquor. The Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
