A brutal murder of a transgender person near Bhubaneswar has triggered outrage and protests.
On Sunday night, a transgender person identified as Anjali alias Sona was stabbed to death near Sifa Gate along National Highway-316 under Pipili police limits. She was rushed to Capital Hospital by fellow community members, but doctors declared her dead. Police have begun an investigation, but the motive remains unclear.
Angered by the slow progress, transgender activists and community members blocked the Airport Road on Monday, demanding the immediate arrest of the killer and stronger protection for their community. The blockade caused severe traffic disruption.
Activist Meera Parida condemned the police investigation as lax and warned of intensified protests if the culprit is not arrested quickly. She even cautioned that the community might resort to extreme measures if justice is delayed. Social organisations have also condemned the killing and demanded strict action.
Pipili police are examining CCTV footage and suspect either old enmity or disputes within the community. They assured that all angles are under investigation and the accused will be caught soon.
