In the heart of Odisha’s Kalahandi district, where development often hinges on trust rather than grand gestures, Vedanta Aluminium’s Project Milaap is quietly reshaping community relations. Launched in December 2023 at the company’s Lanjigarh operations, this Community Connect initiative emphasizes consistent, face-to-face interactions between senior leaders and local villagers, moving beyond one-off events to build enduring partnerships.
The program’s model is straightforward yet powerful: monthly visits where executives step out of the refinery and into village settings like courtyards and schools. No scripted presentations—just open ears for discussions on livelihoods, education, healthcare, and infrastructure. As Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya, CEO of Vedanta Alumina Business, explains, “True leadership isn’t confined to our plant’s boundaries. Milaap has fostered meaningful conversations that help us understand aspirations and address challenges collaboratively.”
Since its start, Milaap has reached 46 villages, engaging over 15,000 residents and benefiting nearly 3,000 households through targeted actions. In 2025 alone, it covered more than 25 villages. Feedback from these sessions has led to practical improvements, such as equipping community spaces with utilities, kitchen tools, and seating. Youth initiatives stand out, with sports equipment like cricket jerseys provided to teams in places like Harekrushnapur, boosting confidence and interest in skills training.
Community voices highlight the shift. Biswambar Pradhani from Harekrushnapur shares, “These visits feel like a village connection day. We’ve received useful support, from community essentials to youth sports kits, making our gatherings stronger.” Additionally, village volunteers have been honored with uniforms, and farmers supplied with Rabi crop seeds and tools to enhance productivity.
What distinguishes Milaap is its focus on follow-through, turning dialogue into action. As Phillip Campbell, Director Technical at Vedanta Aluminium, notes, “It shifts focus to people and conversations that matter, providing lasting perspective.” Over time, this has reduced skepticism, increased participation in development programs, and stabilized communication channels.
In a region where credibility is earned through persistence, Milaap exemplifies how corporate engagement can evolve from transactional to transformative, setting a benchmark for sustainable community involvement in India’s rural landscapes.
