A wild elephant stormed Chhakapadar village in Bolangir district late Thursday night, killing a woman and critically injuring her husband and mother-in-law.
The elephant entered the settlement during the early hours and attacked the family near their home. The woman died instantly from severe injuries. Her husband and mother-in-law suffered critical wounds. Neighbours rushed them to Patnagarh hospital for urgent treatment.
Forest officials began tracking the elephant immediately after the incident. They deployed teams to monitor its movement and reduce the risk of further attacks. Authorities confirmed that emergency services and medical care remain available for affected families.
The Odisha Medical Services Association reported that the attack highlights the growing issue of human-elephant conflict in forested regions. Villagers often face danger when elephants raid crops or enter residential areas. Officials urged residents to stay alert and avoid venturing outside at night.
Local leaders acknowledged the tragedy and promised stronger measures to prevent similar incidents. They emphasised the need for coordinated efforts between forest departments and communities to ensure safety.
The incident underscores the urgent challenge of balancing wildlife conservation with human safety. Odisha continues to witness frequent elephant raids in districts bordering forests. Residents demand long-term solutions, including better fencing, early warning systems, and relocation strategies.
Police confirmed that the identities of the victims will be released after official verification. The community mourns the loss while hoping for the swift recovery of the injured.
