BJD Chief Naveen’s Health and Strategy: What’s Behind Prem Patnaik’s Visit?

Prem Patnaik’s Visit to Naveen Niwas Sparks Political Buzz in Odisha

Prem Patnaik, the elder brother of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik, arrived at Naveen Niwas in Bhubaneswar, triggering widespread speculation in political circles.

The visit comes shortly after Naveen returned home following treatment at SUM Ultimate Medicare. While the stated purpose of Prem’s visit is to check on his brother’s health, political analysts suggest there may be deeper motives tied to the BJD’s future strategies.

Prem Patnaik arrived at Naveen Niwas around 11 AM on Friday and held discussions with doctors, including SUM Ultimate’s Medicine Specialist Dr. Samir Sahu, to review Naveen’s health condition. Sources indicate that Prem had previously visited Naveen during his treatment in Mumbai. Naveen’s recent health challenges, including dehydration and surgery, have kept him in the spotlight, and Prem’s sudden visit has fueled discussions about its timing and intent.

Political observers speculate that Prem’s visit could involve discussions on critical party matters, including the BJD’s strategy for the upcoming brief Assembly session in September and its stance on the Vice-Presidential election scheduled for September 9, 2025. There is also talk that Prem may offer guidance on party management, especially given Naveen’s recent health concerns. Some within the BJD believe Prem could play a key role in advising on the party’s next steps, including its response to rising crimes against women in Odisha, a topic Naveen has expressed concern about.

The visit has also sparked rumours about potential discussions on Naveen’s successor, though BJD leaders have downplayed such claims. Senior BJD MLA Ganeswar Behera clarified that while Naveen trusts his close aide VK Pandian, no official statement has been made about Pandian being the successor. A viral video showing Naveen being assisted by Pandian after leaving the hospital has further intensified debates about Pandian’s role within the party.

On Friday, several BJD leaders, including Debi Prasad Mishra, Niranjan Pujari, Ganeswar Behera, Rajanikanta Singh, Manmath Routaray, Chakramani Kanhar, and Ranjita Sahu, visited Naveen Niwas to meet the party supremo.

After the meeting, Debi Mishra confirmed that Naveen is in good health and discussed key issues like the Polavaram project and the state’s political situation. Mishra emphasised that Prem’s visit was purely familial, with no political agenda.

Meanwhile, BJD leader Manmath Routaray praised Naveen’s energy, stating, “I’ve never seen Naveen so strong. He’s ready for battle and has asked all leaders to stay alert for the fight ahead.” Naveen reportedly urged his party to prepare for the Assembly session and address pressing issues like women’s safety through grassroots movements.

As Naveen recovers and the BJD gears up for key political events, Prem Patnaik’s visit has added an intriguing layer to Odisha’s political landscape, with many awaiting clarity on its implications for the party’s future.
