In a landmark judgment, the Second Additional Sessions Court sentenced bike thief Deepak Sahu to 10 years in jail, marking the first time the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been applied to organised crime in Odisha.
Police arrested Deepak on June 16, 2025, within Lingaraj police station limits. Records show 28 cases registered against him across different police stations, proving his repeated involvement in vehicle thefts.
The court treated the case as organised crime under BNS, making this a historic ruling. Legal experts said the judgment sends a strong message that habitual offenders will face strict punishment under the new law.
Following the verdict, Bhubaneswar police have intensified monitoring of bike and car theft cases. Authorities urged citizens to remain alert and ensure proper safety measures for their vehicles.
