Residents of Bhubaneswar received much-needed relief from intense heat and humidity after a powerful Nor’wester storm brought heavy rainfall and strong winds to the city on Saturday.
The sudden weather change caused a remarkable drop in temperature, transforming conditions across the capital within a short period.
Temperature Falls by 14°C After Rainfall
Before the storm arrived, Bhubaneswar was experiencing scorching conditions, with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees Celsius during the day.
However, heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds significantly cooled the atmosphere. Following the rain, the city’s temperature dropped to 26 degrees Celsius, marking a sharp decline of nearly 14 degrees Celsius.
The dramatic change brought immediate relief to residents who had been struggling with oppressive heat over the past several days.
Heat Index Sees Major Decline
The impact of the Nor’wester activity was also reflected in the heat index, or “feels-like” temperature.
Before the rainfall, the heat index had surged to nearly 50 degrees Celsius due to high humidity levels. After the storm, it dropped sharply to around 28 degrees Celsius, making outdoor conditions far more comfortable.
The reduction in humidity and temperature helped improve overall weather conditions across the city.
Similar Weather Conditions Expected
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), similar weather conditions are likely to continue on Sunday.
Meteorologists have forecast further Nor’wester activity across several parts of Odisha, bringing thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and rainfall.
While mornings may remain hot and humid, thunderstorm activity developing later in the day is expected to moderate temperatures in many districts.
Nor’wester Activity To Continue Across Odisha
The ongoing Nor’wester season is expected to remain active over Odisha during the coming days. Several districts are likely to experience intermittent rainfall, lightning and strong winds.
Weather experts say the storms will help curb extreme daytime temperatures, although humidity levels may continue to remain high before rainfall begins.
Residents have been advised to remain alert during thunderstorm activity and follow weather advisories issued by local authorities.
Relief From Heat, But Caution Still Needed
The recent rainfall has provided substantial relief from the heat wave-like conditions that affected Bhubaneswar and nearby areas. However, authorities have urged people to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure when lightning activity is reported.
With more Nor’wester showers expected, Odisha is likely to witness a mix of cooler temperatures, rainfall and occasional stormy weather over the next few days.
