Bhubaneswar wood and coal stove ban

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced plans to lift restrictions on the use of wood and coal stoves, a move that could benefit local vendors and small businesses.

BMC Mayor Sulochana Das confirmed the decision, stating that traders will be allowed to use traditional stoves once the final resolution is taken. The matter will be formally decided in the upcoming evening meeting of the civic body.

Earlier, the restrictions were imposed to curb air pollution in the city. However, business owners argued that the ban affected livelihoods, particularly those dependent on traditional cooking methods.

Officials said the revised policy will allocate 40 to 50 per cent of land in e-parks to local vendors, ensuring they have space and resources to continue operations. The move reflects BMC’s attempt to balance environmental concerns with economic needs.

The final decision is expected to be announced after the meeting, marking a significant shift in the city’s approach to regulating traditional cooking practices.
