A disturbing incident at Bhograi Police Station in Balasore district has led to the immediate suspension of Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) Sriballav Sahu.
The officer was accused of gross misconduct and dereliction of duty after a young man from Jayrampur was detained and tortured for two days over a minor motorcycle exchange dispute. Shockingly, no formal case was registered against the youth, who was chained and subjected to inhumane treatment during his detention.
The issue came to public attention when Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi visited the police station and expressed outrage over the incident. Upon learning that no case had been filed, Sarangi raised concerns about the unlawful detention and torture. He contacted the Superintendent of Police (SP) via video call, presenting evidence of the youth’s condition.
Following this, DGP YB Khurania suspended him for dereliction of duty.
During the suspension period, Sahu will remain under the disciplinary control of the DIG and will draw standard subsistence allowance (S.A.) and dearness allowance (D.A.) as per Rule 90 of the Odisha Service Code.
Sources reveal that Sahu has a history of controversy, having been involved in similar issues during his tenure at Khantapada, Remuna, and Industrial Area police stations.
This incident has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for stricter oversight of police conduct to prevent such abuses of power.
The case underscores the need for accountability and adherence to legal protocols within law enforcement agencies.
