The iconic Palua Ladu, a traditional sweet delicacy from Odisha’s Bhadrak district, is on the verge of receiving the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, a move that promises to elevate its cultural and commercial significance.
The Bhadrak district administration has initiated the process to secure this recognition, aiming to protect the sweets’ unique identity and promote Palua Ladu on national and international platforms.
The announcement follows a directive from Bhadrak District Collector Dilip Routray, who has instructed all departmental officers, tehsildars, block development officers, and other district-level officials to include Palua Ladu in hospitality packets served at official meetings and events. This strategic inclusion is designed to showcase the sweets’ distinct flavour and cultural value while fostering local pride.
Palua Ladu, renowned for its rich taste and traditional preparation methods, is a beloved delicacy not only in Bhadrak but across Odisha and beyond. Made with simple yet precise ingredients, the sweet reflects the region’s culinary heritage and artisanal expertise. Securing a GI tag will ensure that its authenticity is preserved, preventing imitation and guaranteeing recognition for Bhadrak’s skilled confectioners.
“The GI tag will safeguard the cultural and historical legacy of Palua Ladu while providing a unique identity to Bhadrak,” said Collector Routray in a letter to district officials. “It will also encourage local artisans, boost the regional economy, and promote Odisha’s rich heritage globally.”

The GI tag initiative is expected to have far-reaching impacts. For local artisans, it will provide a platform to expand their market reach, attract tourism, and secure better economic opportunities. For Bhadrak, it will cement the district’s reputation as a hub of culinary excellence. Additionally, the recognition aligns with efforts to preserve Odisha’s intangible cultural heritage, reinforcing the state’s identity on a global stage.
The process to obtain the GI tag involves rigorous documentation and verification to establish the sweets’ unique connection to Bhadrak. The district administration is collaborating with local stakeholders, including confectioners and cultural organisations, to compile historical and technical details about Palua Ladu’s production. Once granted, the GI tag will place Palua Ladu alongside other Odisha specialities like Rasagola and Kandhamal Haldi, which have already earned this distinction.
As Bhadrak gears up for this milestone, the move underscores a broader commitment to celebrating and preserving Odisha’s diverse cultural tapestry.
With Palua Ladu poised to gain global recognition, Bhadrak is ready to share its sweet legacy with the world.
