Matteo Berrettini has reached the Gstaad final after a victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas with scores of 7-6(8/6), and 7-5 on Saturday.
Berrettini, the 2018 Gstaad champion, is on a quest to return to his peak form after injuries disrupted his progress since his top ranking of No.6 in May 2022. This win signifies Berrettini’s second final this year, following his first in Marrakech in April.
Remarkably, despite losing his previous five encounters with the world number 12 Tsitsipas, Berrettini clinched the crucial points in Switzerland. In the final, he will compete against French qualifier Quentin Halys, currently ranked 192nd.
Halys earned his final berth by overcoming Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (7/2), marking his debut in an ATP final.
Berrettini’s resurgence began with his Marrakech triumph, followed by a final appearance in Stuttgart where he was defeated by Britain’s Jack Draper in three sets.
Berrettini skipped the French Open but had a strong showing at Wimbledon, reaching the second round before a tight four-set loss to fellow Italian Jannik Sinner.
