In a major anti-encroachment drive, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) cleared several illegal structures blocking drainage channels in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.
The enforcement action was carried out in Bhoi Nagar, Unit-9, where authorities demolished a puja mandap, nine roadside shops, and a temporary cabin built over a drain.
What Was Removed
According to officials, the following encroachments were cleared:
- One puja mandap
- Nine roadside shops
- A temporary cabin
These structures were reportedly built on government land and were obstructing the natural flow of drainage water.
Reason Behind the Drive
The demolition drive was initiated after a requisition from the General Administration department regarding unauthorized occupation of land along drainage channels.
Authorities said:
- Encroachments were blocking water flow
- Such obstructions are a major cause of waterlogging during monsoon
- Around 20 decimal of land was recovered
Police Presence and Warning
To ensure smooth execution, police personnel were deployed at the site during the operation.
Officials also issued a strict warning:
- Further illegal construction will face legal action
- Similar drives will continue in other parts of the city
Focus on Monsoon Preparedness
The BDA emphasized that clearing drainage channels is crucial for preventing flooding during heavy rains. Illegal constructions over drains have been identified as a key factor behind recurring waterlogging in Bhubaneswar.
Residents Demand Wider Action
Following the drive, residents have urged authorities to expand the crackdown to other areas such as:
- Sundarpada
- Old Town
These areas reportedly face similar issues of encroachments over drains.
The BDA’s latest enforcement drive signals a stricter approach towards illegal encroachments in Bhubaneswar. With monsoon approaching, such actions are expected to play a key role in reducing urban flooding and improving civic infrastructure.
