Despite a nationwide strike called by bank employees across India, banks will remain open today and continue to provide services to customers, according to official sources. The strike has been organised primarily to press the demand for a five-day workweek, with all Saturdays declared as holidays.

The strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), a joint platform representing various bank employee associations. While the announcement raised concerns among customers about possible bank closures, authorities have clarified that bank branches will function normally.

Why Are Bank Employees Protesting?

Bank unions have been demanding the implementation of a five-day working week, a long-pending issue raised during multiple rounds of discussions with the government and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA). As part of the protest, bank employees in several states have been holding demonstrations and collective actions to highlight their demands.

Services to Continue, Minor Disruptions Possible

According to banking officials, core banking operations will not be suspended, and customers can visit branches for essential services. However, there may be partial disruptions in some locations, particularly in services such as:

  • Cash deposits and withdrawals

  • Cheque clearance

  • Counter-based transactions

ATM services and digital banking platforms, including internet and mobile banking, are expected to function normally throughout the day.

Situation in Odisha and Other States

In Odisha, bank employees have joined the nationwide protest at various locations, though no large-scale disruption has been reported. Discussions between the Central Government, IBA, and bank unions are ongoing, and a resolution is expected in the near future.

Customers have been advised to use digital banking services wherever possible and contact their respective bank branches for branch-specific updates.

Key Demands of Bank Unions

  • Nationwide agitation by public sector bank employees

  • Protest led by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU)

  • Demand for a five-day workweek in banks

  • Limited impact expected on government bank services

  • Cash transactions and cheque clearance may see partial disruption
