Bankipur Bypoll: Prashant Kishor Ends BJP’s Three‑Decade Reign

Prashant Kishor has wrested the Bankipur Assembly seat from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), ending its uninterrupted 31‑year hold.

The bypoll, necessitated after BJP national president Nitin Nabin moved to the Rajya Sabha, saw Kishor secure his first electoral victory and enter the Bihar Assembly as an MLA.

Voting on July 30 recorded a turnout of 34.30 per cent, with results declared on August 3. For Kishor and his Jan Suraaj Party, the win is historic – their first‑ever Assembly success after failing to secure a seat in the 2025 elections. For the BJP, the loss is symbolic, as Bankipur had been a fortress since 1995, closely tied to the Nabin family’s legacy.

The BJP deployed its full organisational strength, hoping to retain the seat with a strong margin to bolster Nabin’s national standing. Yet Kishor’s grassroots campaign shifted the narrative. He walked through neighbourhoods, highlighting broken roads, waterlogging, traffic congestion, and poor civic amenities. He also tapped into youth anger over exam controversies, including NEET, and spoke about systemic governance failures.

Kishor’s campaign style – foot marches, street‑corner meetings, and “Chai Par Charcha” – contrasted sharply with the BJP’s reliance on its traditional machinery. He even invoked the death of Bharat Tiwari in Ara, alleging police excesses, to underline his message of accountability.

Bankipur’s political history underscores the scale of the upset. Once known as Patna West, the seat produced two chief ministers – Krishna Ballabh Sahay and Mahamaya Prasad Sinha – before becoming a BJP bastion under Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha and later his son Nitin Nabin. Successive elections saw the BJP secure decisive margins, with Nabin winning comfortably in 2006, 2010, 2015, 2020, and 2025.

The 2026 bypoll, however, broke that pattern. Dissatisfaction among sections of BJP’s traditional supporters, combined with Kishor’s civic‑issue‑driven campaign, turned the tide. For Jan Suraaj, Bankipur is more than a seat – it is proof that visibility can be converted into votes. For the BJP, the fall of its Patna fortress is a symbolic blow.
