The world-famous Jagannath Temple in Puri witnessed a special purification ritual today as Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra underwent the Bada Maha Snana ritual.
The temple administration initiated the ritual after blood was reportedly found inside the Changeda Ghara near the wooden structures of the sanctum.
According to tradition, the Bada Maha Snana ritual takes place whenever impurity is detected inside the temple premises. After the completion of Avakash Puja, the deities were bathed in the Bada Maha Snana ritual to restore sanctity. During this time, public darshan remained suspended, leaving thousands of devotees waiting outside the temple.
Temple authorities clarified that darshan will resume only after the completion of the ritual. The administration issued an official notice informing devotees about the temporary suspension.
The Jagannath Temple follows strict ancient customs to preserve its spiritual sanctity. Whenever any impurity is noticed, the deities undergo Bada Maha Snana, which involves elaborate bathing and purification rites. Until the ritual concludes, entry for devotees remains prohibited.
Large crowds gathered outside the temple, patiently waiting for the completion of the ceremony. Devotees expressed both concern and reverence, acknowledging the importance of maintaining the purity of the shrine.
