Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad): The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has placed tin sheets around Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, amid growing demands for its removal from certain political and social groups.
The move comes after repeated protests and calls for the tomb’s relocation, citing Aurangzeb’s controversial legacy. The tin barricades were erected on Tuesday to “protect the monument” and prevent any potential vandalism, according to ASI officials.
Aurangzeb’s tomb, located in Khuldabad, is a protected monument under ASI. Despite being a simple grave as per the emperor’s wish, it has recently become the center of political and public attention.
Following the ASI’s action, security has been increased around the tomb site to avoid any untoward incidents. Local police have been deployed to maintain law and order.
The shielding of the tomb has sparked reactions across political circles. While some leaders supported ASI’s decision to protect the historical site, others reiterated their demand for removal or restrictions on public visits to the grave.
Meanwhile, ASI clarified that the tin sheets were installed temporarily as a precautionary measure and the monument remains under their protection as per the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act.
Aurangzeb, known for his expansion of the Mughal Empire and controversial policies, was buried at Khuldabad in 1707. His tomb is a significant historical site, attracting scholars and tourists alike.
