Anupama Parameswaran recalls ‘narcissistic abuse’: ‘I cried every night, lost weight, had panic attacks’

Anupama Parameswaran has opened up about a deeply distressing past relationship, saying the emotional turmoil affected her mental and physical health and left her struggling with anxiety, panic attacks and significant weight loss.

Actor Anupama Parameswaran has spoken candidly about a difficult relationship from her past, describing what she experienced as “narcissistic abuse” and detailing the profound impact it had on her wellbeing.

In the second part of her conversation with Dhanya Varma, Anupama said the relationship was marked by extreme emotional highs and lows. She recalled experiencing panic attacks, anxiety, blackouts and substantial weight loss while continuing to work.

‘I would throw up and not eat anything’

Speaking about the period, Anupama said the emotional stress began manifesting physically.

She recalled suffering panic and anxiety attacks, losing a significant amount of weight and experiencing an eye twitch so severe that shooting had to be stopped. She also said there were occasions when conversations would leave her physically unwell.

According to Anupama, she would sometimes “throw up” and be unable to eat. She also described crying for hours every night before having to wake up and report for work.

The actor further revealed that her lacrimal gland became swollen and she eventually required surgery.

Anupama stressed that these problems were unlike anything she had experienced growing up, describing herself as a happy and normal child before the relationship.

‘It was like a spider web’

Anupama said leaving the relationship was not straightforward despite the emotional damage she was experiencing.

She compared the situation to being trapped in a “spider web” and said the pattern involved gaslighting, manipulation and repeated attempts to make her feel responsible for the problems.

She recalled eventually telling the person that the relationship was affecting her peace and that they could no longer continue that way.

As she began recognising what she described as lies and manipulation, Anupama said she started confronting the person. According to her account, the situation escalated as the other person allegedly attempted to shift the blame onto her.

‘I could see the demon’

Anupama said both families eventually became involved and that the situation reached a point where the “bubble” around the relationship broke.

She also recalled a final confrontation in which she felt she could see a different side of the person.

“I could see the mask peeling off, and I could see the demon,” she said, describing the moment.

Anupama said she eventually had to threaten the person to get them to speak to her, adding that she felt the person never took accountability for their actions.

Anupama did not name the person

The actor has not identified the person involved in the relationship.

Following her revelations, social media users speculated about the identity of her former partner, with some linking the discussion to actor Dhruv Vikram. However, Anupama has not named him as the person she was referring to, and the speculation remains unconfirmed.

Anupama had previously spoken about going through a breakup, but her latest conversation offered a much more detailed account of the emotional and physical difficulties she says she endured.

Her comments have since drawn attention online, particularly for highlighting how manipulation and emotional abuse can have consequences beyond the relationship itself, affecting a person’s mental and physical wellbeing.
