Anganwadi workers in Odisha raised their voices in Bhubaneswar on November 24, pressing for an 11-point charter of demands.
The protest, organised by the All Odisha Anganwadi Ladies Workers Association under the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, drew thousands of participants to Lower PMG Square.
The workers reminded the government that the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) project began in 1975 with only six services. However, it now delivers nearly 60 services. Despite this expansion, they argued that Anganwadi workers and helpers still receive meagre honorariums. Moreover, many said they live in distress after retirement, even after serving for decades.
The protesters demanded government recognition for Anganwadi workers and helpers. Until then, they sought Rs 18,000 per month for workers and Rs 9,000 for helpers. In addition, they asked for the implementation of election promises, including an additional Rs 3,000 for workers and Rs 1,000 for helpers.
Furthermore, they demanded 5G mobile phones and SIM cards to manage online work, reimbursement of work-related expenses, and an end to exploitation under project-based contracts. They called for full government employee status, social security coverage, retirement benefits of Rs 10 lakh for workers and Rs 5 lakh for helpers, monthly pensions, and gratuity as per Supreme Court directives. They also sought 100 per cent promotion of Anganwadi workers to supervisor posts. Finally, they demanded inclusion of Anganwadi workers under the Ayushman Bharat health scheme.
State leaders, including Sumita Mahapatra, Ganesh Mishra, Anjali Patel, Badal Kumar Maharana, Prithviraj Panda, Bimala Lakra, Mandakini Pradhan, and Pratima Manjari Kar, addressed the gathering. Meanwhile, Association General Secretary Kunjalata Das coordinated the protest.
Ultimately, the rally highlighted the growing discontent among Anganwadi workers, who vowed to continue their struggle until the government meets their demands.
