Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported a service disruption in the United Arab Emirates after unidentified objects struck one of its data centres, triggering sparks and a fire.
The company said the incident occurred around 4:30 pm Dubai time on Sunday. Emergency response teams extinguished the blaze and shut down power to the affected facility and backup generators as a precautionary measure.
In an update on its Health Dashboard, AWS confirmed that one of its Availability Zones — a cluster of data centres within a region — was impacted.
Traffic Diverted to Other Regions
AWS said it is rerouting customer traffic to other operational facilities to minimise disruption. The company operates 123 Availability Zones across 39 regions worldwide.
Other data centre clusters in the UAE and neighbouring regions remain unaffected, according to the company.
AWS has not provided a timeline for restoring electricity at the impacted site.
Link to Regional Conflict Unclear
It remains uncertain whether the incident is connected to the broader geopolitical escalation in West Asia.
The outage occurred the same day Iranian projectiles reportedly struck locations in the United Arab Emirates, amid ongoing hostilities involving the US and Iran.
Recent regional tensions have led to missile and drone activity targeting various locations across the Gulf, including in Qatar, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia.
However, AWS has not confirmed any direct link between the fire at its facility and the wider conflict.
Impact on Cloud Services and Businesses
AWS is a major provider of cloud computing services to governments, startups, financial institutions, and multinational corporations operating in the UAE and wider Middle East.
Service disruptions in a single Availability Zone can affect:
-
Cloud-hosted applications
-
E-commerce platforms
-
Financial transaction systems
-
Data storage and enterprise workloads
By diverting traffic to alternate zones, AWS aims to reduce downtime and maintain business continuity for customers.
Restoration Efforts Ongoing
The company said restoration efforts are underway but did not specify how long the disruption may last. Clients have been advised to monitor the AWS Health Dashboard for updates.
As regional tensions continue, infrastructure resilience and redundancy are expected to remain a key focus for global technology providers operating in the Middle East.
