In a deeply disturbing incident of animal cruelty, a man in Gandhi Nagar’s Maruti Vihar area of Berhampur allegedly threw acid on several cows that had wandered near his residence.
The attack has left four cows critically injured and has triggered public outrage.
According to the complaint filed by M. Ramakrishna Rao, a local resident and cattle owner, he owns 7–8 cows and sells milk to sustain his family. Beginning Sunday, he noticed unexplained wounds on one of his cows, followed by similar injuries on another by Tuesday. Suspecting foul play, he began keeping watch from a distance while allowing two cows to graze near his residence.
During this time, he witnessed an individual allegedly hurling acid at one of the cows. When confronted, the accused reportedly replied, “Your cows roam near my house and create filth,” justifying the heinous act. Rao approached the Town Police Station and filed a formal complaint, demanding accountability for the inhumane treatment.
Veterinary care has been administered to the injured cows, but their condition remains critical. Police have acknowledged receipt of the complaint and assured that action will be taken based on evidence gathered during the ongoing investigation.
Animal welfare activists have condemned the incident, calling for strict legal action and greater awareness to prevent such acts of cruelty.
