Odisha Vigilance on Monday nabbed an accountant of the Block Education Office (BEO), Kujanga, for accepting a bribe from a school teacher.
The accused, Suryakanta Swain, was caught red-handed inside his office while taking Rs 5,000 from the complainant—a teacher—who had approached him for processing a house building advance of Rs 1.5 lakh, already sanctioned by the competent authority.
Despite official approval, the bill had been held up by Swain without reason. The complainant alleged that the accused was deliberately delaying the billing process and demanding money for the release of funds.
Acting on the complaint, Odisha Vigilance officials laid a trap and apprehended Swain while he was accepting the bribe. The full amount was recovered from his possession and seized as evidence.
Simultaneously, searches were launched at two separate locations linked to the accused to trace assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
A case has been registered under Cuttack Vigilance PS Case No.16/2025 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. The investigation is currently underway.
