Indian wrestler Sunil Kumar etched his name into the annals of sporting history on Wednesday, securing a brilliant bronze medal in the men’s 87kg Greco-Roman category at the 2026 Asian Games.
By successfully retaining the bronze he first won at the 2023 Hangzhou edition, the 27-year-old officially became the first Indian in history to win multiple Greco-Roman medals at the continental showpiece. His podium finish also successfully opened India’s wrestling medal account at the ongoing Aichi-Nagoya Games.
The Road to the Podium
Sunil’s campaign showcased trademark grit and tactical brilliance at the Inae Sports Centre. He launched his tournament earlier in the day with an assertive victory over Tajikistan’s Muhammad Sultonzoda in the quarterfinals. Though a hard-fought semi-final loss to Japan’s Taizo Yoshida halted his march toward the gold medal match, Sunil rebounded with supreme focus.
In the bronze medal playoff, he delivered a masterclass against the Philippines’ Callum Johnston Roberts. Dominating the mat from the opening whistle, Sunil coasted to a resounding 9-0 victory by technical superiority, completely shutting out his opponent and keeping him off the scoreboard to seal his historic milestone.
A Landmark Milestone for Indian Wrestling
Greco-Roman wrestling has historically been a strenuous discipline for India since it entered the Asian Games program in 1962, with only a select group of 11 Indians ever securing a podium finish prior to this feat. Sunil’s back-to-back continental medals bridge a massive competitive gap and stand as a testament to endurance, inspiring a new generation of grapplers across the nation.
