The historic Maa Kichakeswari Temple at Khiching in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district is poised for a remarkable transformation.
The Central Government has officially sanctioned a substantial ₹44.91 crore for the comprehensive development and modernisation of the temple complex under the flagship PRASHAD scheme.
The momentous decision was shared by the Union Minister of Culture and Tourism through his official social media handle. Highlighting the government’s steadfast vision, the Minister stated: “A new milestone in strengthening pilgrimage tourism in Odisha. Under the PRASHAD Scheme… Rs 44.91 crore has been sanctioned for the Development of the Maa Kichakeswari Temple Complex at Khiching, Mayurbhanj, Odisha. Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji, we are committed to developing world-class facilities at our sacred destinations while preserving India’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage.
Upgrading Infrastructure While Preserving Heritage
Approved under the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) initiative by the Ministry of Tourism, the project is designed to overhaul basic and advanced infrastructure. The blueprint focuses heavily on upgrading amenities within the temple premises, refining visitor and pilgrim facilitation, and smoothing out logistical bottlenecks.
Crucially, project planners have emphasised that the modern infrastructure additions will be executed without compromising the site’s authentic religious, structural, and cultural character. Khiching, known for its magnificent black chlorite architecture and deep-rooted historical significance as the ancient capital of the Bhanja rulers, requires delicate handling to protect its archaeological identity.
Catalyst for Local Economy and Tourism
As a prominent religious and cultural landmark in northern Odisha, the elevation of the Kichakeswari Temple is expected to act as a major catalyst for tourism in the Mayurbhanj district. Better connectivity, improved lodging proximity, and cleaner visitor zones will likely draw higher footfall from heritage travellers and spiritual tourists alike.
