The Indian men’s compound archery team scripted a sensational comeback on Wednesday to clinch the gold medal at the Asian Games 2026.
Comprising the sharp-shooting trio of Kushal Dalal, Sahil Jadhav, and Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru, the Indian team edged past hosts and powerhouse China 238-237 in a breathtaking final. The victory not only capped off a stellar campaign in Aichi-Nagoya but also completed a magnificent hat-trick of gold medals for India’s compound archers, successfully retaining all three titles won at the previous Hangzhou Games.
A Rocky Start and a Dramatic Turnaround
The final was a roller-coaster of emotions. India found themselves on the back foot early, trailing 58-60 after the opening end following a couple of 9s. Despite firing six consecutive perfect 10s in the second end, the deficit widened, leaving India down 118-120.
Unfazed by the pressure, the Indian trio chipped away at the lead, narrowing the gap to a single point at 178-179 after the third end.
The turning point arrived in the dying moments of the match. Under immense pressure, China’s Jiahao Liao shot an 8, leaving the door wide open for the reigning champions. Seizing the opportunity with supreme composure, the Indian archers delivered a flawless final six shots to finish on 238, snatching a magnificent one-point victory and sealing their place in archery history.
Road to Glory
To reach the summit clash, the Indian team proved their mettle by overcoming a formidable South Korean side comprising Choi Eun Gyu, Choi Yonghee, and Kim Jongho with a score of 236-229 in the semifinals.
With this thrilling triumph, India’s compound archery contingent continues its absolute dominance on the continental stage, adding another glorious chapter to the nation’s sporting history.
