Displaying nerves of steel and unmatched defensive discipline, the Indian Junior Women’s Team clinched the AHF Junior Asia Cup 2026 title after defeating hosts China 1-0 in a tense, hard-fought final on Sunday.
The triumph in Moqi not only secured a hat-trick of continental crowns for the defending champions but also guaranteed India’s qualification for the upcoming FIH Junior Women’s World Cup. In recognition of their phenomenal campaign, Hockey India announced a cash reward of Rs 3 lakh for each player and Rs 1.5 lakh for support staff.
A Game of Fine Margins
The summit clash began on a cagey note. China enjoyed higher possession and applied early pressure, but India’s backline remained resolute. Despite the hosts’ territorial advantage, clear-cut chances were kept to a minimum as the opening quarter ended goalless.
The deadlock broke two minutes into the second quarter. Sanika Chandrakant Mane demonstrated brilliant off-the-ball awareness, sneaking behind a Chinese defender just five metres out. Connecting cleanly with a long slap-push into the circle, Sanika produced a deft deflection past goalkeeper Xu Mengjiao to hand India a crucial 1-0 lead.
China pushed hard for an equaliser, coming closest through the match’s only penalty corner, which was disallowed for height. India nearly doubled their advantage right before half-time when captain Khaidem Shileima Chanu fired a strong shot on target, only to be denied by a sharp save from the Chinese keeper.
Defensive Masterclass in the Second Half
Carrying their narrow lead into the second half, the Indian side faced relentless pressure from a desperate home team. Seven minutes into the third quarter, a dangerous baseline cross threatened the Indian goal, but the defence intercepted brilliantly to clear the danger.
The final quarter transformed into a showcase of tactical discipline. India built an impenetrable fortress around their circle, neutralising every Chinese attack through compact positioning and composure under pressure.
An Unbeaten Championship Run
India finished the tournament entirely undefeated. After topping the Elite Pool with three wins and a draw, they cruised past South Korea 5-1 in the semi-finals before sealing the ultimate glory against China, etching their name in history as three-time continental champions.
