The Jayapur Town Police arrested two individuals involved in looting lakhs of rupees from an out-of-state truck driver under the pretext of offering assistance.
Police recovered Rs 30,000 in cash and two mobile phones from the accused before forwarding them to court.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Goldi Sheikh (24), alias Gauranga, from Gadapadar Harijan Sahi, and C.H. Kranti (20) from the Paper Mill area.
According to sources, the incident took place when a Maharashtra-based truck driver travelling from Bhubaneswar to Visakhapatnam broke down near Jayapur. Unfamiliar with the area, he sought Goldi Sheikh’s help to get the truck repaired. Over the next two to three days, Goldi accompanied him to local garages and secretly watched as the driver entered his PhonePe password while paying for meals and other expenses.
Exploiting the situation, Goldi later summoned three accomplices, assaulted the driver, and snatched his mobile phone. The gang subsequently transferred approximately Rs 90,000 from the victim’s account to theirs using the stolen credentials and fled the scene.
Following a complaint, Jayapur Town Police registered Case No. 315/26 on August 14. Out of the looted Rs 90,000, officers recovered Rs 30,000 cash alongside two mobile phones.
Jayapur Town IIC Ullas Chandra Rout confirmed that both accused were produced before the court on Saturday following their medical examination. Police added that search operations are underway to arrest the remaining two absconding suspects involved in the crime.
