Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday remembered the victims of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks in the United States as the world marked the 25th anniversary of 9/11. He also reaffirmed India’s unwavering commitment to combating terrorism.
In a post on X, Modi paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the attacks and expressed solidarity with families whose lives were permanently changed by the tragedy.
“25 years on from the horrific 9/11 attacks, we remember and honour the victims and stand in solidarity with the families whose lives were forever changed,” the prime minister said.
PM Modi stresses India’s fight against terrorism
Reinforcing India’s position on counter-terrorism, Modi said the country has remained at the forefront of the global fight against terrorism for several decades.
“Terrorism has claimed countless lives around the world. As a victim of cross-border terrorism, India has been at the forefront of this fight for several decades,” he said.
The prime minister added that while the nature of the threat continues to evolve, India’s opposition to terrorism remains firm.
“While the threat keeps evolving, our resolve and opposition to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations remain unwavering. We stand in solidarity with all efforts to combat this scourge,” Modi said.
PM Modi recalls 2014 visit to 9/11 memorial
The prime minister also shared images from his visit to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York in 2014.
The visit took place during Modi’s first official trip to the United States as prime minister and included a visit to the memorial dedicated to the victims of the attacks.
US marks 25 years of 9/11 attacks
The United States is observing the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks carried out by al-Qaeda on September 11, 2001.
A total of 2,977 people were killed after hijackers crashed three aircraft into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Virginia. A fourth hijacked plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Memorial events across the US on Friday include wreath-laying ceremonies, flag displays, moments of silence, vigils and readings of victims’ names.
US President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the anniversary ceremony at the Pentagon. Addressing a 9/11 remembrance event in Washington earlier this week, Trump described the attacks as a moment that divided history into what came before and after.
