The US Open witnessed a major upset as Emma Navarro, seeded 26th, ousted world No.7 Karolina Muchova 6-3, 7-5 in the third round.
Muchova, a two-time US Open semifinalist and recent Wimbledon finalist, struggled to find rhythm, committing 32 unforced errors against just 18 winners. Navarro capitalised on her opponent’s inconsistency, breaking at crucial moments and maintaining composure throughout.
The Czech star, returning from minor surgery after Wimbledon, had opportunities to shift momentum in the second set but faltered under pressure. Navarro seized a decisive break in the 11th game before serving out the match with authority.
This victory marked Navarro’s third top-10 win of the season, extending her reputation as one of the tour’s rising threats. The American, who reached the US Open semifinals in 2024, celebrated emphatically on the Grandstand court, where she has built a loyal following.
Navarro now advances to the last 16, where she will face either Elina Svitolina or Anna Kalinskaya in her pursuit of another deep run at her home Grand Slam.
