The Supreme Court of India will hear the plea for premature release of Rabindra Pal alias Dara Singh, convicted in the 1999 Graham Staines murder case.
The apex court had earlier directed the Odisha government to take a decision on Singh’s release, but no resolution has yet been made. A bench expressed displeasure after being informed that the Sentence Review Board’s report was still pending, questioning the delay in submission.
The court warned that if the state fails to act, it may itself take a decision: “Decide, otherwise we will.”
Dara Singh has been serving a life sentence since 1999, completing over 26 years in prison. He had applied to the Supreme Court seeking remission of his sentence.
The case continues to draw national attention, with the court’s directive putting pressure on the Odisha government and the Review Board to act swiftly.
