The Higher Education Department of Odisha has issued an advisory to all government and aided colleges across the state, urging them to reduce the use of cooking oil in hostels and canteens and promote healthier food practices.
The directive, signed by Dr Ramesh Chandra Behera, Deputy Secretary to Government, follows the Prime Minister’s appeal to citizens to contribute towards reducing fuel demand amid global supply disruptions. The letter instructs institutions to avoid high‑oil menu items and to reduce deep‑fried food preparation without compromising nutrition.
Colleges have also been encouraged to use traditional oils like ghee, mustard, and groundnut instead of imported palm or soybean oil. The advisory further suggests that NSS and Youth Red Cross volunteers conduct awareness campaigns on minimising household oil consumption.
Officials said the move aims to promote sustainable habits and healthier diets among students while supporting India’s broader goal of energy conservation and self‑reliance.
