The Central Government is keeping a close watch on the unfolding crisis in Nepal after a sudden flash flood—possibly triggered by a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF)—sent water levels surging in the Trishuli river near the Nepal-China border.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday evening spoke directly with the Chief Ministers of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the two Indian states most likely to feel the downstream impact. In a post on X, Shah described the devastation as “deeply tragic” and extended condolences to the families who have lost loved ones. “The Government of India stands with Nepal in this hour of crisis,” he wrote.
According to an advisory from the Central Water Commission (CWC) and media reports, water levels rose sharply at Furke Khola on the Trishuli River, roughly 160 km from the Indian border. The flood wave is expected to travel downstream into the Gandak River system that flows through Bihar and parts of Uttar Pradesh.
Authorities in both states have already begun evacuations and are providing support to communities living near the India-Nepal border. Local administration, rescue teams and units of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been placed on high alert in vulnerable areas.
Senior officers from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Jal Shakti and Ministry of Defence are continuously monitoring the situation. The latest CWC assessment indicates that water levels on the Nepal side of the reservoirs are now receding and the situation remains under control. Officials have emphasised that there is no cause for panic.

As the floodwaters continue their journey southward, India’s coordinated response—combining diplomatic solidarity with robust preparedness on the ground—underscores the close ties between the two neighbours and the priority given to protecting lives on both sides of the border.
The government has assured that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide all necessary support to Nepal and to the border districts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
