As the second phase of floods continues to batter Odisha, the state government has made the safety of livestock its top priority.

Nearly 4.82 lakh animals belonging to 89,474 farmers have been affected, along with over 51,000 poultry birds. In response, authorities have swung into action with rapid medical camps, emergency fodder supplies, and dedicated rescue teams.

Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik has directed officials to ensure no animal is left without care or feed. “Protecting our animal wealth is non-negotiable,” the Minister emphasised while reviewing the situation.

So far, 48 Rapid Response Teams have been deployed in the worst-hit districts. These teams, working alongside local veterinary staff, have organised 129 animal health camps where 5,126 animals received treatment and 11,450 were given post-flood vaccinations. In addition, 177 animals have been safely relocated to 10 temporary shelters.

Fodder distribution has been equally swift. A total of 405.85 metric tonnes of cattle feed has already reached flood-affected areas, supplemented by 25.35 quintals of green fodder, 1.15 quintals of dry fodder, and 4 quintals of rice bran. Control rooms at the state, district, and block levels remain active round-the-clock to coordinate relief and prepare compensation packages for affected farmers.

The Minister assured that an adequate stock of fodder is available and more will be rushed wherever needed. He has also instructed officials to ensure timely and fair compensation so that livestock owners can recover quickly.

With coordinated efforts on the ground, Odisha is determined to minimise losses and protect the livelihoods of thousands of farming families who depend on their animals.
