A tragic accident at Barabakhara waterfall in Debrigarh sanctuary claimed the life of Hitesh Pradhan, a youth from Gobindpur village, after he slipped and fell on Monday.
The incident has reignited concerns over tourist safety at waterfalls in Baragada district, where repeated accidents have been reported due to slippery paths, deep waters, and lack of precautionary measures.
Locals and social organisations allege that absence of guides, lifeguards, warning boards, railings, and regular patrols has turned scenic waterfalls into danger zones. They point out that visitors, especially youngsters, often risk their lives by venturing close to slippery edges for selfies and photos.
Past incidents at Gandhamardan hills and other waterfalls in Debrigarh sanctuary have also highlighted the need for stronger safety protocols. Despite repeated appeals, measures remain inadequate.
District administration officials said that hazardous spots will be identified and safety arrangements put in place soon, urging tourists to remain cautious and avoid visiting waterfalls without local guides.
