Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday challenged the Opposition to a 24‑hour debate on student issues, declaring that he is ready to respond to every question under parliamentary rules and conventions.
Speaking to reporters amid continuing Lok Sabha disruptions in the fourth week of the Monsoon Session, Shah said he was prepared to begin the discussion at 3 PM today and continue until 3 PM tomorrow. “If the Opposition submits a letter to the Speaker by 2 PM, we will start the discussion at 3 PM, and I will provide answers to everything by 3 PM tomorrow,” he said.
Shah emphasised that serious matters must be discussed through formal parliamentary debate, not through casual statements. “Such a serious issue cannot be discussed in that manner. This may be the Opposition’s method, but it is not the parliamentary way,” he remarked.
The Home Minister added that he was even willing to suspend Question Hour if the Speaker permitted, assuring that he would personally sit through the entire debate, take notes, and respond point‑by‑point. “Now, the Opposition must decide whether they want to engage in a discussion or create an uproar,” he said.
The remarks come as the Congress‑led Opposition continues to demand a statement from the Prime Minister on student‑related matters and the alleged Ram Mandir theft, keeping the House in turmoil. Shah’s challenge effectively places the onus on the Opposition to respond and participate in a structured debate.
