Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran has resigned from his position following a prolonged boardroom deadlock over his reappointment.

He will continue in the role until his current term ends in February 2027, sources confirmed.

The resignation comes at a critical time for the $400‑billion Tata Group, which oversees more than 30 companies including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Motors, and Air India. Tata Sons, the principal holding company, is majority‑owned by Tata Trusts, which controls 66% of the conglomerate.

Chandrasekaran’s exit follows differences with Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata, who opposed his reappointment earlier this year. Noel Tata reportedly sought assurances that Tata Sons would never be listed, a condition Chandrasekaran declined to accept. Disagreements also surfaced over board representation.

The leadership shake‑up rattled investors, with Tata Group stocks falling as much as 4% on Wednesday. TCS led the decline, dropping 4.1%, while Tata Motors slipped 2.8%.

In a statement, Chandrasekaran said he had informed the board of his decision and urged it to begin the succession process. “Leading Tata Sons over the past decade has been a great honour and a profound responsibility,” he noted, adding that clarity on leadership was vital for ongoing strategic projects.

He highlighted that both Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had recommended extending his tenure, but the board failed to reach consensus. “It has been six months since that board meeting, and no resolution has been reached to date,” he said.

Chandrasekaran emphasised the need for a clear succession plan to safeguard the interests of employees, investors, and stakeholders. His departure marks the end of a significant era in Tata Group’s leadership, leaving the board to decide on the next chairman.
