MEA Condemns Defacement of Indian Embassy in Slovenia, Seeks Action Against Perpetrators

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday condemned the alleged defacement of the Indian Embassy premises in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and called for action against those responsible.

The ministry said it had taken up the matter with Slovenian authorities in both New Delhi and Ljubljana. The MEA also stressed that diplomatic premises are protected under the Vienna Convention.

“We condemn the defacement of the premises of our Embassy in Ljubljana, Slovenia by anti-India elements,” the ministry said.

“Under the Vienna Convention, diplomatic premises are inviolable and must be protected,” it added.

India seeks accountability from Slovenian authorities

The MEA said it has raised the matter strongly with Slovenian officials and sought accountability for those behind what it described as a reprehensible act.

The ministry said it expects the perpetrators to be identified and held responsible.

The incident comes amid concerns over the spread of hateful propaganda and disinformation by groups described by the MEA as anti-India elements.

The ministry also urged law enforcement authorities in other countries to take note of such activities and respond appropriately.

What the Vienna Convention says

The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations provides protections for diplomatic missions and their premises. Host countries have a responsibility to protect diplomatic premises from intrusion or damage.

The MEA’s statement highlighted this obligation while seeking action from Slovenian authorities over the reported incident in Ljubljana.

The latest development is expected to remain a point of diplomatic engagement between India and Slovenia as authorities look into the incident and work to establish accountability.
