The Centre on Monday said it is ready for a detailed discussion in Parliament on the ongoing student protests and issues linked to the movement, amid continued disruptions in both Houses.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government has offered to discuss the students’ movement and related developments. He also urged the Opposition to allow the proceedings to continue while Home Minister Amit Shah responds to the matter.

The Opposition has been demanding that Shah address Parliament over allegations of excessive police action against protesters during a march towards Parliament on July 20.

Govt offers detailed discussion on student movement

Rijiju said the government’s position was clear and that it was prepared to hold a “full and detailed discussion” on the student movement and activities associated with it.

He also appealed to Opposition parties not to disrupt proceedings when the Home Minister makes his statement.

The government wants the issue to be discussed in detail once the debate begins, while the Opposition has continued to press for accountability over the police action against protesters.

Why Amit Shah’s Parliament appearance is being sought

The demand for Shah to respond stems from the July 20 protest and the subsequent political controversy over alleged police excesses against students.

Opposition leaders have argued that the Home Ministry should explain the circumstances surrounding the police response, as the Delhi Police comes under the ministry.

The issue has contributed to repeated disruptions during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which began on July 20.

Congress leaders have also questioned the absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah from parliamentary proceedings while the Opposition has been raising the matter.

Opposition demands accountability

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders have sought a statement from Shah on the student protests and the alleged use of force against demonstrators.

Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi previously argued that the government was responsible for the disruption of Parliament because of its refusal to address the students’ concerns and demands.

The Opposition has also raised issues related to examination irregularities, including concerns surrounding competitive examinations and the demand for accountability from those responsible.

Student groups continue to raise exam concerns

Student protesters have been demanding action over alleged irregularities in examinations, including concerns surrounding the NEET-UG examination.

The protesters have also sought greater transparency and accountability in the examination system. Their demands have added to the wider political confrontation between the government and Opposition during the Monsoon Session.

The government has maintained that it is willing to discuss the issues in Parliament.

What happens next?

With the Centre now offering a detailed discussion, attention is likely to focus on Amit Shah’s expected response and whether the Opposition allows the proceedings to continue during his statement.

The development could provide an opportunity for the government and Opposition to debate the student protests, alleged police action and examination-related concerns on the floor of Parliament.
