India’s Murali Sreeshankar delivered another stellar performance at the Commonwealth Games 2026, clinching the silver medal in the men’s long jump with a best leap of 8.09 m.
The Kerala athlete made history as the first Indian long jumper to win two Commonwealth medals, adding to his silver from Birmingham 2022.
The 27‑year‑old opened with an 8.03 m jump before improving to 8.09 m on his second attempt. Former world champion Tajay Gayle of Jamaica took gold with 8.15 m, while Scotland’s Stephen Mackenzie claimed bronze at 8.08 m. Fellow Indian Lokesh Sathyanathan finished fifth with 7.97 m.
Sreeshankar’s achievement cements his place among India’s long‑jump greats, joining the ranks of Suresh Babu (1978), Anju Bobby George (2002), and M. Prajusha (2010).
The medal also marks a triumphant comeback after a ruptured patellar tendon in 2024 that sidelined him from the Paris Olympics. “Very happy, very grateful for being here again… thankful to God and proud to win silver for my country,” he said after the event.
Despite the milestone, Sreeshankar admitted he was aiming for gold. “I wanted to redeem the silver from Birmingham to gold. I have to keep improving my game and skills,” he said, adding that the result boosts his confidence ahead of the Asian Games.
Earlier this season, Sreeshankar recorded a season‑best 8.38 m at the National Inter‑State Championships in Bhubaneswar, reaffirming his return to peak form.
His Glasgow silver not only extends India’s medal tally but also underscores the nation’s growing prowess in athletics — a story of resilience, redemption, and record‑breaking consistency.
