The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 by voice vote, even as the House witnessed uproar over remarks made by Rahul Gandhi and allegations against Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the July 20 student protest march.

The bill, introduced earlier this week, seeks to strengthen the Public Examinations Act by prescribing stricter penalties for exam paper leaks, including up to 10 years’ imprisonment and fines of Rs 50 lakh.

The move comes in the wake of nationwide student protests over the NEET paper leak controversy, which led to the resignation of former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Opposition members continued to disrupt proceedings, pressing the government for accountability on the NEET issue. Despite the sloganeering, the bill was cleared, and the House was adjourned until 11 am Thursday.

The legislation marks a significant step in the Centre’s efforts to curb examination malpractice, though political tensions around student protests and accountability remain high.
