Glasgow witnessed history as India’s weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu powered her way to the nation’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, achieving a remarkable three-peat of CWG golds.
Competing in the women’s 49kg category, Chanu lifted a combined 190 kg — 85 kg in the snatch and 105 kg in the clean and jerk — setting new Games and Commonwealth records in both segments.
This victory not only opened India’s medal tally but also marked Chanu’s fourth CWG medal overall, cementing her legacy as one of the country’s greatest weightlifters. Her performance drew admiration from fans and officials alike, symbolizing resilience, consistency, and national pride.
Chanu’s achievement was complemented by fellow lifter Chanambam Rishikanta Singh, who also clinched a medal, making it a double celebration for Indian weightlifting on the opening day. With this golden start, India’s campaign at CWG 2026 has gained powerful momentum, inspiring athletes across disciplines to aim higher.
