An oil tanker carrying nearly 2 million barrels of Iraqi crude oil has safely arrived at Paradip Port in Odisha after surviving gunfire near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes.

The vessel, MT Sanmar Herald, completed its voyage despite heightened security concerns in the Middle East, ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of crude oil to India.

Vessel Navigated Through High-Risk Waters

According to reports, the tanker was transporting Basra Medium and Basra Heavy crude oil sourced from Iraq when it encountered gunfire while transiting waters near the Strait of Hormuz.

The incident reportedly occurred amid continuing geopolitical tensions in the region. Following the security threat, the ship altered its planned route and safely continued its journey toward the Indian coastline without any further reported incidents.

No damage to the vessel or injuries among the crew have been officially reported.

Crude Oil Offloading Begins at Paradip

After reaching Odisha, the tanker anchored around 22 kilometres offshore near Paradip.

The vessel began discharging its cargo through the port’s Single Point Mooring (SPM) facility, an offshore system designed to handle large crude oil tankers efficiently before transferring the cargo to onshore storage and refinery infrastructure.

The arrival ensures a significant supply of crude oil for India’s energy sector.

Crew Recognised for Safe Navigation

Reports indicate that around 22 crew members, including the ship’s captain, were on board during the voyage through the conflict-prone region.

Paradip Port authorities boarded the vessel after its arrival to congratulate and felicitate the captain and crew for successfully navigating one of the world’s most sensitive shipping corridors under challenging conditions.

The crew remained on board supervising cargo discharge operations, and no official statement from the captain or crew members had been issued at the time of reporting.

Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital gateway for global energy supplies, with a substantial portion of the world’s seaborne crude oil passing through the narrow waterway each day.

Any disruption or security incident in the region can significantly affect international oil markets, shipping operations and energy-importing countries, including India.

Despite the reported gunfire incident, the successful arrival of MT Sanmar Herald highlights the resilience of commercial shipping operations even during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.

India’s Energy Supply Remains Uninterrupted

The safe delivery of the crude cargo to Paradip provides reassurance for India’s energy supply chain at a time when instability in West Asia continues to pose risks to maritime trade.

Authorities have not released further details regarding the reported attack, and investigations into the incident are expected to continue.
